What does vitamin/mineral deficiency actually mean?

Vitamins are vital substances which the human organism cannot produce itself and thus can only be supplied by our food. There are over 20 different vitamins which are necessary for different functions and organs in our body. Minerals like calcium and magnesium and iron, cooper, zinc, iodine and selenium have a similar reaction: these elements also have to be absorbed with our food. If supplied insufficiently signs of deficiency or diseases might arise which are caused by the fact that one or several of these vital substances are missing.

Normally a balanced and varied diet is enough to meet the requirement of vitamins and minerals. Under certain circumstances of in certain phases of life, however, the need for them is higher: with small children or juveniles, during pregnancy or breast feeding, certain illnesses and alcoholism may lead to deficiency symptoms.

Some of these substances, both vitamins and minerals, however, are disadvantageous in high quantities: an overdose may lead to diseases and there is only a small difference between the beneficial and disadvantageous doses.

Why is a vitamin/mineral deficiency treated ?

Even a slight deficiency can lead to concentration problems, nervousness, overweight, metabolism diseases, inefficiency, tiredness and susceptibility to infections. Due to an unbalanced diet (eg. during old age or drastic weight reduction), taking certain medication or illness which restricts the eating of vital nourishing components, treatment with individual vitamins or a combination can be necessary.

How is a vitamin/mineral deficiency treated?

Depending on the cause and extent your doctor will prescribe a special vitamin/mineral compound either for the arising deficiency or as a preventive measure to avoid a deficiency under certain conditions of require or recommend a certain diet. Cafeteria food at lunch can for example be balanced out with a nourishing breakfast or dinner. If you have diarrhea or cannot each a balanced meal while travelling, care must be taken to increase the amount.

The dosage of certain vitamins must be precisely adhered to in order to prevent damaging over-doses.
